The university was established in 1992 based on the law on the formation of university institutions and higher education institutions, and it is the only state university located in the city of Aydın.

About the university's educational level
The university takes its name from the man who served as the first democratically elected prime minister by the people and was executed by the military after the 1960 coup. The current president of the university is Dr. Javid Birjan. The university includes more than 14 faculties, 3 institutes, 1 conservatory, 5 higher education institutes, 18 higher vocational training institutes, and 24 application and research centers.
