Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt State University was established by Law No. 27648 of the Turkish Grand National Assembly on June 21, 2010. The university began its educational activities on November 3, 2011. The university was established with the aim of creating an educational program that addresses contemporary issues and is based on an "open" approach, far from the closed, geographically confined approach.

Most of the university's current faculty members worked at other universities before moving to Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University.
